Wayne Rooney has revealed he still joined in with Plymouth’s wild celebrations after ‘reacting in a manner he shouldn’t have’ against Blackburn.

The former Manchester United and England star took charge of the Pilgrims over the summer, guiding them to beat league leaders Sunderland and, as of Saturday, high-flyers Blackburn since.

Morgan Whittaker fired in a winner to make it 2-1 in the seventh minute of added time – but Rooney wasn’t there to witness it, having been given a straight red card after a furious touchline outburst.

But it turns out the 38-year-old didn’t miss out on soaking in the last-minute euphoria, as he revealed his hilarious celebration with the club secretary.

Joining talkSPORT Drive two days afterwards and reacting to the sending off, he said: “Me and the club secretary in the tunnel were celebrating, I broke his glasses celebrating!

“So the win was a deserved win, but sometimes it boils over a little bit and that’s the nature of football.”

Saturday marked the first time Rooney had earned a red card as a manager, with the 38-year-old being clearly unimpressed by the build-up to Blackburn’s 86th minute equaliser to cancel out Michael Obafemi’s first-half opener.

Rovers had won a free kick and Joe Rankin-Costello went on to convert with a header at the back-post.

“It was my first time as a manager [getting sent off],” he continued.

“I think as a manager or a head coach, decisions happen on the pitch and looking back, it’s a free kick, so the goal shouldn’t have stood.

“In the Championship you don’t have VAR so the officials missed it and your emotions kick in and you know, I’m a passionate person, we want to win.

“We worked extremely hard to win the game and to have that taken away by what I feel was a mistake by the officials, I felt was really harsh. I reacted in a manner in which I shouldn’t have and the red card was deserved.

“From my point of view the fans were fantastic, it almost galvanised the players and the stadium and we kept pushing to get the winning goal.”

Plymouth now sit 14th in the Championship going into the international break.

Rooney penned a three-year deal over the summer, following his sacking at Birmingham City in January.

It’s his fourth job in the dugout following his time with Derby and MLS club DC United after marking an end to his glittering career that saw him win the Premier League and Champions League with Manchester United and become the club’s all-time record goalscorer.
