Newcastle United have their sights set on the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.

The Magpies haven’t won a trophy for over half a century, but they have a golden opportunity to do it on Sunday, when they take on Arne Slot’s side.

The focus is completely on the game, but both clubs are readying plans for the upcoming summer transfer window as well.

Ben Jacobs has now revealed that Newcastle are eyeing a surprise move for one Liverpool player before the start of next season.

Newcastle United want to sign Diogo Jota from Liverpool

Liverpool signed Diogo Jota from Wolves in a deal worth £45 million (BBC).

The Portugal international has produced some huge moments for the Reds over the years, but he is not a guaranteed starter anymore.

Reports have claimed that Jota is one among five players Liverpool are open to selling once the transfer window opens this summer.

The attacker will enter the final two years of his contract in July, Jacobs has now claimed that Newcastle are among clubs who are keeping an eye on his situation.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “”What I can tell you in terms of clubs that are closely looking at Jota, is that you have Newcastle United from the Premier League.

“A Jota exit is not guaranteed, but there is a realistic possibility that suitors will make an approach to Liverpool to better understand the situation.

“Wolves may be interested, but Jota wants European and ideally Champions League football. Newcastle may be able to offer him that.”

Liverpool could pull off a swap deal using Jota

Newcastle’s interest in Jota is a bit of a surprise, but it could turn out to be good news for Liverpool if they really are open to selling the Portuguese forward.

The Reds are said to be interested in not one, but two Newcastle players.

Reports have claimed that Liverpool want to sign Alexander Isak, while fellow Magpies attacker Anthony Gordon has been a target for the Merseysiders too.

Both of them will be really expensive this summer, but Liverpool could use Newcastle’s interest in Jota to bring the price down for either Isak or Gordon.

Whether Eddie Howe and co will be open to that, however, remains to be seen.
