Aston Villa manager Unai Emery hasn’t counted upon Philippe Coutinho since he arrived at Villa Park in November 2022.
The Villans allowed the 32-year-old to spend last season on loan at Qatari side Al-Duhail and he returned to the Premier League side in the summer.
Back in July, Aston Villa sanctioned another loan move for Coutinho as he returned to his former club, Vasco da Gama, on a season-long loan deal.
The Brazilian club’s president, Pedrinho, has expressed his desire to hold on to the Aston Villa owned player beyond his loan spell and his comments are relayed by ESPN in Brazil.
The former Liverpool and Barcelona man’s loan deal at Vasco da Gama lasts until June 2025 and his contract at Aston Villa until 2026. The president insists it won’t be easy for his side to buy the Brazilian before that.
“I intend to [try for a new loan]. It’s difficult [to buy him from Aston Villa], until then [end of loan] I don’t know, suddenly there’s an investor [laughs],” he said.
Since returning to Vasco da Gama, the attacking midfielder has scored three goals and registered one assist from 18 games in all competitions. Pedrinho knew the Aston Villa man would need time to adapt and talks about the impact of his return to the club.
“Coutinho is an exceptional guy. He came from the Arab world with a different kind of dynamic, so we knew he might take a bit longer,” Pedrinho explained.
“And what he brings back to the club, in terms of entertainment, the passion of the fans, the children, the volume of members [fans]. And what he delivers on the pitch, he’s a very good player. With a well-drilled pre-season, we expect a lot from him.”
