In the summer, Lewis Hall's switch from Chelsea to Newcastle United became a permanent deal, a player who didn't feature too often under Eddie Howe last season.

Hall has already surpassed the 22 appearances he made in all competitions last term for Newcastle, a season in which he often played understudy to Dan Burn.

Now, the 20-year-old is one of the first names on the teamsheet for Howe, a full-back who is arguably showing even more potential than Tino Livramento at this stage.

In recognition of his excellent form, Hall earned two England caps under Lee Carsley back in November, and he'll hope that he's also catching the eye of Thomas Tuchel right now too.

England don't necessarily have a first-choice left-back, a position that remains up for grabs.

That being said, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker discussed Hall's credentials for England on 'The Rest is Football' podcast.

The panel were asked about players who deserve to feature for England more often, and Shearer's mind immediately went to Hall, who he thought was having a 'fantastic' season.

Dishing out some praise to the former Chelsea man, Shearer said: "I would go Lewis Hall. I know he’s already got caps, but I still think that’s a position up for grabs.

"And he’s having a fantastic season in everything he’s doing, defending, going forward.

"He’s looking the real deal. And I think that could be the position that he could take for the next six, seven, eight years, if he keeps on going."

Lineker then immediately replied: "Yeah, totally agree."

Tuchel won't pick his first England squad until March, meaning there's still plenty of time for Hall to continue to impress.

Elliot Anderson also tipped for England call-up

Although Newcastle fans will be delighted to hear Hall's name in that conversation, Micah Richards' pick perhaps may not sit so well.

Richards suggested that Elliot Anderson deserved his chance for England now, a player Newcastle were forced to sell to Nottingham Forest in the summer owing to their PSR issues.

And speaking of those who perhaps left St James' Park too early, Newcastle fans were amazed by Matz Sels for Forest in their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

Sels never really got a chance on Tyneside, playing 14 games for the club before he was then sold to Strasbourg.

And perhaps the 32-year-old is now the exact kind of keeper Howe would like to recruit, an area of the squad the club are still aiming to improve.
