Arsenal legend Ian Wright seemed to have revelled in Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Not because Tottenham won, but because of how Manchester United lost, whilst being down to ten men, and the flack Arsenal got the week before.

Arsenal recorded a drama-filled 2-2 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad, conceding a late John Stones goal after being down to ten men for the second half.

Leandro Trossard was sent off just before the break, just like Bruno Fernades was against Spurs, but the difference here is that Arsenal were winning their game 2-1 and Manchester United were losing 1-0.

Either way, the likes of Roy Keane and Gary Neville, to name a few, were critical of Arsenal’s approach in the second half and how they sat back with no intention of getting into the opposition’s half.

It was a commendable effort from the Premier League title chasers, who proceeded to concede right at the end, with several Manchester United-supporting pundits taking aim at Mikel Arteta’s tactics.

The beauty of life and football is that it always finds a way, so fast forward a week later and Erik ten Hag is tasked with the same dilemma.

As Wright pointed out, Manchester United were ‘still trying to go forward when they should be coming back’ in that second half against Spurs.

It resulted in Dejan Kulusevski scoring straight after the restart, before some pressure from the home team resulted in Dominic Solanke scoring again in Tottenham colours and all but finishing the game off.

Wright noted ‘I was getting it from Manchester United pundits’ the week before and he made sure to get his own back.

The legendary striker shared that ‘I was cooking people’ on WhatsApp when watching Manchester United’s approach with ten men, as he told Premier League Productions (30/09/24 at 1:05 pm).

Ian Wright’s subtle dig at Roy Keane after ten-man Manchester United lose to Tottenham

“When Arsenal went down to the ten men, and obviously against Man City, arguably the best team in the world,” said Wright.

“I was getting it from Manchester United pundits, they were cooking me, ‘the great Arsenal, they aren’t even trying to get out’. I watched them (Man United) trying to still go forward when they should be coming back. Maybe taking the tactics (from) what Arsenal (did against Man City) and go, ‘listen, we aren’t getting anything going, let’s just make sure we stay solid’. And they kept going forward!

“So, you can imagine what the WhatsApp messages was like. I was cooking people in there.”

Arsenal v Manchester United

At the start of December, Arsenal will welcome their old rivals to the Emirates for an old-school classic, but the two teams will be in different worlds, in regards to the Premier League table.

Will Ten Hag still be in charge of Manchester United? The Arsenal fans are probably hoping so because it will probably make it more entertaining for them.

But you just know that Wright is going to be ready to verbally batter his good mate Keane if Arsenal come out as expected winners.

Saying that, despite the gulf between the two, they were pretty close encounters last season, with Arsenal taking maximum points in both matches.
