Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen has taken to social media to welcome new signing a fellow Dutchman Donyell Malen to the club.
The 25-year-old joined the club from German giants Borussia Dortmund for a reported initial fee of £21million which could rise to £27.7million due to performance-related add-ons.
Villa haven’t confirmed the fee or the winger’s contract length following his move to the Premier League and Champions League side.
Malen had been in and out of the side at Dortmund, starting 10 of his 11 games across all competitions, scoring five goals, and providing one assist in his 957 minutes of action.
The winger scored the opener in Dortmund’s 3-1 Bundesliga win over Wolfsburg on December 22nd, his last start for the club.
Ian Maatsen welcomes Donyell Malen to Aston Villa while struggling for minutes
Maatsen, 22, is yet to establish himself at Villa since making the move from Chelsea in the summer, starting just seven of his 23 games across all competitions, scoring zero goals, and providing one assist in his 794 minutes.
Unai Emery has largely preferred Lucas Digne at left-back, with the Frenchman starting 22 of his 24 games as Villa remain in contention for Champions League qualification one again this season.
Maatsen may not be getting much playing time at Villa, but he is clearly happy to see his international teammate, taking to Instagram to welcome Malen.
Villa travel to Everton on Wednesday (January 15), seeking to rain on David Moyes’ parade in his first game since returning to the club.
Emery’s side will then travel to Arsenal, knowing a win could seriously dent the North London club’s title aspirations once again.
