Rangers have next to no chance of signing Lennon Miller this summer unless they first raise funds in the transfer market, sources have told Football Insider.

Miller is set to be in huge demand over the upcoming transfer window, with both Rangers and arch-rivals Celtic vying to win the race for the Motherwell midfielder, 18, and a host of European clubs interested.

Premier League clubs are also likely to rear their heads at Fir Park once the window opens, with Miller seen as Scotland’s best young talent in a generation and already a part of Steve Clarke’s senior squad.

However, sources have told Football Insider that the “only way” Rangers can hope to even be involved in the race is by generating funds in the form of player sales, accomodating a place for Miller in their team.

This comes after ex-Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Rangers have historically been more focused on Scottish talent than Celtic, urging the latter to complete an £8million transfer.

Celtic’s successes compared to Rangers in the League Cup, Premiership and particularly the Champions League this season give them a financial platform to pursue Miller, but the same can’t be said at Ibrox.

Rangers at long odds to complete Lennon Miller transfer

Football Insider revealed on 8 March that Lyon are the latest club beyond Scottish borders to show an interest in Miller, following failed January bids from Udinese and Union Saint-Gilloise for the teenager.

Rangers in their current financial state competing with the likes of these sides – plus any Premier League clubs who enter the race this summer – is a non-starter, with Miller having a huge career ahead of him.

Miller moving from Fir Park to Ibrox therefore remains a long shot given the level of upheaval which is set to take place at Rangers this summer, as 49ers Enterprises take charge following their majority takeover.

The arrival of 49ers Enterprises is set to bring about sweeping changes throughout the entire fabric of Rangers, but the scale of the to-do list they’ll inherit in Govan could also see them miss out on Miller.

The 49ers will have potentially an entire boardroom to replace, as well as making a decision on Barry Ferguson’s future and potentially hiring a new manager to take charge of the Light Blues going forward.

That’s before addressing the state of Rangers’ squad, which after having had £14million spent on it last summer, is still in need of plenty of work to come close to the levels Celtic have achieved this term

Signing the likes of Vaclav Cerny permanently, arguably Gers’ best player this season, will be top of the priority list, and by the time ‘luxury’ players can be sought, Miller will surely have been snapped up already.
