Lucas Digne was left devastated in a message to Aston Villa supporters following their narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Aston Villa's Champions League hopes suffered a blow after a hard-fought match at the Etihad Stadium on 22 April.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for the hosts before Marcus Rashford levelled for Unai Emery's side, offering a glimmer of hope in a crucial tie for both sides.

But that optimism faded deep into stoppage time when Axel Disasi was caught out on the left by Jeremy Doku, whose quick turn and pace allowed him to deliver a low cross for Matheus Nunes to score the late winner. Disasi was criticised by Aston Villa supporters for his role in the goal, with some fans even calling for him to be sent back to Chelsea.

Meanwhile, it marked Digne's first start after three games on the bench, but despite his return to the XI, he couldn't help Villa avoid defeat on a frustrating night in Manchester.

Lucas Digne's role reduced following Ian Maatsen emergence

The Frenchman shared his frustration with supporters on Instagram, posting: "Frustrating night but we have some amazing games in front of us, no time to think."

His message received support from teammate Jacob Ramsey, who liked the post in appreciation.

Digne has found himself in a more rotational role this season following Aston Villa's £37.5 million move for Ian Maatsen last summer. The Dutchman has impressed in recent weeks, showing growth both defensively and as an attacking outlet.

Initially, there were concerns over Maatsen's defensive abilities under Unai Emery, but those doubts have faded with his consistent performances on both flanks.

That has come at Digne's expense, who made his first Premier League start in four matches during the defeat to City.

Still, Emery clearly values the experience Digne brings to the squad. The left-back has contributed seven assists in 3,176 minutes across all competitions this season.

Villa's recent form has been strong, with eight wins in their last ten matches in all competitions.

However, two crucial defeats have been costly–first, a loss to PSG that led to their Champions League exit, and most recently, the setback against fellow top-four contenders Manchester City.

Emery has faced some criticism for his tactical decisions in key moments, with any missteps now carrying weight as the Champions League race intensifies.

Nonetheless, Villa's focus now shifts to potential silverware, as they prepare to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup on 26 April.
