Joao Felix led the Chelsea players who jumped on Renato Veiga for his celebratory social media post after scoring in the 3-1 win at Astana.
The Portuguese player scored the third goal in the Blues’ Conference League win on December 12. It marked his second goal of the competition, and he has continued to impress manager Enzo Maresca, earning Premier League minutes this season.
Veiga took to Instagram after the game to celebrate the victory in the freezing Kazakhstan, where temperatures dipped below -10 degrees.
In his post, he held up two fingers on one hand and one on the other, seemingly referencing the temperature. Captioning it "Cold innit" with the number “12” followed by emojis, he inadvertently flipped the digits.
Félix was quick to tease him in Portuguese, commenting, "Didn't you learn numbers in school?" This referred to the mix-up in his hand gesture. Romeo Lavia joined in with, "That's 21", while Marc Cucurella playfully added in Spanish, "Will you dedicate it to me? 2+1" referencing his own squad number three.
Enzo Maresca prove chances at Chelsea are there
The West London club is thriving under Maresca, boasting a perfect record in Europe and holding second place in the league.
Despite the squad's size, the Italian manager has managed it well, making several changes each matchday to maximise the available talent.
However, with the transfer window approaching, players who fail to seize their opportunities—such as Carney Chukwuemeka—could face uncertainty. Even high-profile players like Christopher Nkunku have been linked with moves due to limited game time.
This scenario was always likely with a new manager, an active summer transfer window, and a squad of around 40 players [BBC Sport].
The 21-year-old Veiga has shown, however, that opportunities exist for those who perform. Despite limited minutes, the young full-back has impressed, contributing three goals and assists from left-back.
With a demanding festive period ahead, Maresca's rotation policy suggests further chances for players to shine. Whether they take those opportunities depends on them, and the young full-back has already proven it's possible to make an impact.
In other news, Chelsea loaning Marc Guiu would be "invaluable" to him as Premier League clubs could now be lining up.
