Jonathan David delivers emphatic Liverpool verdict just after the Reds' win over Lille tonight
Yesterday at 05:34 PM
Liverpool made it seven wins in a row in the Champions League to ensure their progress as group phase winners thanks to their victory over Lille on Tuesday night.
Arne Slot’s charges opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Mohamed Salah scored with a first-time finish from Curtis Jones' superb through-ball.
Salah’s goal made him the first Liverpool player to score 50 goals for his side in Europe.
Jonathan David equalised for Lille just after the hour, but Harvey Elliott equalised via a deflection in the 67th minute.
Darwin Nunez also saw a goal ruled out for offside, while Lille finished the game with ten men due to Aissa Mandi receiving two bookings.
David spoke to reporters after the game and he paid Liverpool arguably the biggest compliment possible.
Jonathan David says Liverpool might now be ‘the very best team in the world’
David, speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, said Liverpool might just be the very best team in the world at present.
“Very good team,” said the Canada international. “I think they might be the best team in the world at the moment.
“Tonight is one more goal [for me]. I’m happy I managed to score but we didn’t manage to get the three points.”
David also said: “We came against the first of the Champions League group so we knew it was going to be a complicated game – even more so when we went to 10 men.”
Could David come to the Premier League?
David is set to be one of the most highly sought after players on the market this year, because of his contract expiring this summer.
David is on the radar of West Ham and Manchester United, while Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United have also been linked with David.
Although Liverpool aren’t said to be keeping tabs on David at present, who knows whether Slot will take heed of his comments and register an interest.
After all, David is set to be a free agent, and the Reds have made quite a name for themselves when it comes to snapping up top targets when the opportunity arrives.
