Eberechi Eze has established himself as a key player under Thomas Tuchel with his performance off the bench for England against Albania.

Having been left amongst the substitutes for the German’s first match on Friday, a 2-0 win over Albania, Eze was the first player brought off the bench by Tuchel in England’s 3-0 victory over Latvia on Monday.

Reece James’ first-half free-kick had already put England 1-0 up, and Eze’s introduction coincided with the Three Lions asserting their control of the scoreline; Harry Kane doubling the lead seven minutes later.

Eze popped up himself to net the third just eight minutes after that with a fine individual effort, and as second-half substitute cameos go, the 26-year-old has done his long-term chances no harm at all.

Eze’s contribution off the bench on Monday – albeit against an opposition ranked 140th in the world – has surely re-established the Palace number 10’s place in the playmaking pecking order for England.

Eze’s form for Crystal Palace this season has more than justified his England place

The Eagles talisman’s winding solo effort, despite taking a big deflection on its way goalwards, has been met with plenty of admiration from his team-mates at both club and country, and understandably so.

Eze posted a slow-motion reel of his first England strike on Instagram (25 March), and Jude Bellingham – who had been withdrawn for Phil Foden nine minutes prior – was one of the first to congratulate him.

In a play-on words of Eze’s name to say “easy”, Bellingham wrote in response: “Too Eze”.

England squad place a must for Eberechi Eze after Latvia display

Although matches against lowly-ranked opposition like Albania and Latvia and particular isn’t much of a litmus test to determine Tuchel’s preferred Three Lions squad, Eze has given him plenty to think about.

With the likes of Bellingham, Foden, Morgan Rogers, Jarrod Bowen, Marcus Rashford, Curtis Jones and Morgan Gibbs-White all included alongside Eze for this month’s break, the competition is absolutely rife.

However, given Foden and Jones both followed Eze off the bench – and Gibbs-White remained amongst the substitutes throughout – a potential pecking order could already be in place in Tuchel’s mind.

Eze’s seamless slotting into a wide-left role potentially makes him the go-to man in a problem position for the Three Lions, and performances like he displayed against Latvia will only stand him in good stead.
