Jeremy Doku has gained traction from rival players on social media following the Man City star’s message while on international duty.

The 22-year-old played a vital role as the Red Devils avoided total embarrassment in the Nations League, overturning a 3-1 defeat to Ukraine with a 3-0 home victory on Sunday 23 March.

Club Brugge’s Maxim De Cuyper opened the scoring in the 70th minute, with help from Doku, before Romelu Lukaku fired home an 11-minute brace, including an overhead kick at the Cegeka Arena.

While Pep Guardiola’s struggles back at Man City have been evident this season, the winger’s performances have not gone unnoticed, albeit only notching seven goal contributions in the league.

Those numbers clearly helped him during the two-week break away from the Etihad Stadium.

Jeremy Doku provides important contribution in Belgium success

Taking to Instagram [24 March], Doku wrote: “We showed who we are… This is Belgium! Proud of the fight, proud of the team. Glory to God always,” with praying emojis.

Teammates Erling Haaland, who has been tipped for an early Man City exit, Nathan Ake, Jack Grealish and Savinho flocked onto social media to like the post, with Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber and Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch also joining.

Pep Guardiola already shaping up for different Man City squad next season

Football Insider verdict

With Doku only 22 years of age, he is likely to stick around for the next few years, but the same cannot be said for some of the older players in Guardiola’s squad this summer.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Kevin De Bruyne wants to leave Man City, and after 412 appearances for the Citizens, his departure would symbolise an emotional passing of the torch.

Pep Guardiola’s squad is an ageing one.

City’s ageing squad was somewhat helped during the winter transfer window when Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov came flooding through the doors.

However, that is unlikely to be the end of a squad overhaul ahead of the summer transfer window, with several players already being linked with exits following a campaign from hell.

The Citizens might not even qualify for the Champions League, with a handful of Premier League clubs all battling for a top-four finish, and that really would be the final straw for many City supporters.
