VAR should have picked up on a kick by Arsenal midfielder Jorginho during his side’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee exclusively told Football Insider that the FA could now review the incident, which may lead to a punishment for the 33-year-old.

It was a frustrating evening for Mikel Arteta’s side at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday (4 January) as they dropped more points in the Premier League title race.

Now Hackett believes that Arsenal could be set for another problem as a result of what Jorginho did during one key moment of the match.

Jorginho could face FA review after Arsenal vs Brighton

Things initially started well for the Gunners against Fabian Hurzeler’s side, as they took a 1-0 lead at half-time thanks to Ethan Nwaneri, the teenager continuing some fine form while filling in for Bukayo Saka.

However, Arsenal were pegged back on the hour mark when Joao Pedro equalised from the penalty spot after William Saliba clashed heads with the Brighton striker while going for the ball.

As the penalty was being taken, footage appeared to capture Jorginho aiming a kick backwards at an opposition player stood behind him, as both prepared to deal with a possible rebound.

Now Hackett believes that the midfielder should have been punished for that action by VAR, and could yet face a retrospective investigation from the FA.

Speaking to Football Insider about that moment from the Arsenal man, the former referee said:

“I watched this and I think these are the things you expect VAR to pick up on, you can’t ignore them.

“He did kick out, it is an offence and I think he’s lucky that he didn’t get a sanction. Now the question is will the FA Disciplinary Panel, because this is the procedure, they’ll ask the referee did he see it.

“What I suggest is he did not, and therefore that might open up the door to the FA panel reviewing that particular incident.”

With that penalty enough to ensure both sides had to settle for a point, Arsenal now sit six behind league leaders Liverpool in the table, having played a game more than Arne Slot’s side.

In other news, Arsenal have made a decision over a transfer for Alexander Isak.
