Borja Sainz faces at least a three-match ban if the Norwich City man is found guilty of spitting at an opponent during their clash with Sunderland, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that resorting to such an action will be “considered an act of violent conduct”.

Sainz has been in outstanding form for the Canaries this season, scoring 15 goals in 25 Championship appearances for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side.

However, it now appears as though Norwich may be facing a period where they are unable to call upon one of their key players after what happened late in 2024.

The trip to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland on the 21st December is not one many associated with the East Anglian outfit will remember too fondly.

After taking an early lead, Norwich were eventually beaten 2-1 by Regis Le Bris’ side in what proved to be a blow to their pursuit of a Championship play-off spot.

Now that match could have further consequences for the club, after the FA confirmed that Sainz has been charged with spitting at an opponent in the 74th minute of that match.

Hackett now believes that could leave the Spaniard facing a ban for such a serious act. Giving his reaction to the charge, the former referee told Football Insider:

“Spitting at an opponent is considered an act of violent conduct. It is despicable that a player should resort to that action. If proven he will serve a minimum three match ban.”

Sainz has until Tuesday (7 January) to respond to the charge meaning he will be available when Norwich host Coventry City this weekend.

The Canaries go into that game 11th in the Championship table, six points adrift of the play-off places.

In other news, a former Norwich City figure has rejected a role with a new club.
