Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella was criticised for his “blatant unfair” offence on David Brooks after he left the Bournemouth man hurt at Stamford Bridge, according to Keith Hackett.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the Spanish international is becoming a "serious offender" and that officials need to keep an eye on him during games.
The incident occurred during Chelsea's dramatic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on 14 January.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring, but a Justin Kluivert penalty and a goal from Antoine Semenyo turned the game in Bournemouth's favour. Captain Reece James salvaged a point with a stoppage-time free kick.
Cucurella has become a regular starter under Enzo Maresca, keeping his spot ahead of Renato Veiga, who is reportedly seeking a move away from the club.
Marc Cucurella is a risk for Chelsea due to his antics
The left-back was in headlines for the wrong reason however and his action on Brooks was put under scrutiny by Hackett.
In the third minute, Cucurella blocked Brooks’ run way off the ball, leaving the winger winded and requiring treatment for two minutes. Chelsea played on while officials failed to notice or stop the game, adding to the controversy.
Former PGMOL chief Hackett speaking to Football Insider criticised the Spaniard’s ongoing actions, stating: “Cucurella is beginning to become a serious offender in games and match officials in their preparations should be aware that he is a player to keep an eye on.
“His act is a blatant unfair impeding offence for which he should have received a yellow card.”
Despite the contentious moment, Enzo Maresca's side avoided defeat thanks to James, whose stoppage-time equaliser salvaged a point.
While some fans were frustrated by the manager's comments on James, his crucial goal may prove he deserves more consistent playing time.
