Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle are unlikely to beat Chelsea in the race to land Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Palace may wish they accepted a big-money bid from the Magpies for their captain in the summer window.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (8 January) that Chelsea have opened preliminary talks to re-sign Crystal Palace star Guehi.

Guehi, 24, is believed to be keen to re-join the Blues – three and a half years after he was sold to Palace for a fee of £18million.

The England international was the subject of a failed transfer bid from Newcastle in the summer window, with reports suggesting an offer of around £65million was rejected.

His contract at Selhurst Park only runs until June 2026.

Newcastle won’t win Guehi race against Chelsea, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "He's now being linked with Chelsea.

"I don't know whether Palace wish they had done the deal with Newcastle, which was probably at the top price for Guehi.

"I don't know whether Chelsea will pay similar money, I doubt it very much.

"He won't be going to Newcastle, in my opinion. But this is a weird January window where you look at player-plus-cash deals and all sorts.

"Palace may wish that they'd sold Guehi back in the summer."
