Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk could face a “four-year ban” if found guilty of taking a performance-enhancing substance.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the bombshell could present a problem with the Blues’ signing of young talent, with Wyness holding concerns about “behaviour” of up-and-coming stars.

Mudryk was provisionally suspended by the Football Association earlier this month (17 December) after failing a drugs test.

As per FA rules, the winger has the opportunity to provide an explanation for the result during this suspension while a decision is taken on a formal charge.

The Ukraine international has insisted the failed test is “a complete shock” and claimed he has “not done anything wrong”.

He last played for Chelsea on 28 November and missed five games in the lead-up to news of the suspension.

Mudryk’s contract at Stamford Bridge runs until June 2031 after he penned an extension earlier this year.

Chelsea star Mudryk faces ‘four-year ban’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "Let's be very clear, he's not been found guilty and the B sample has not been opened – as far as I'm aware.

"But he could be facing a ban of up to four years, if he's found guilty.

"For a young talent like that, it's a big problem – for him and Chelsea.

"This gives you just one problem with the signing of so much young talent. It's ok if they progress and become good players, but with young players, there is a chance of issues coming up around their behaviour.

"I hope he's innocent, but if he's found guilty then it could be up to four years – that's a big chunk out of a career in football.

"It would be covered under Fifa, a global ban. In this situation, I think any ban would cover every federation – so he'd have a big problem."
