Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he believes Chelsea will rightfully not be handed a points deduction over secret payments made by the club’s previous ownership.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Blues’ current owners deserve credit for self-reporting irregularities under Roman Abramovich’s reign.
According to The Guardian (15 January), an outcome is expected before the end of March from the Premier League’s investigation into secret payments in transfer deals for the likes of Willian, Samuel Eto’o and Eden Hazard.
It is claimed Chelsea are negotiating with the Premier League over a financial settlement after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital discovered irregularities and reported them during the takeover process.
The Blues already reached a settlement with Uefa in 2023, paying out £8.6million.
Chelsea will rightfully dodge points deduction for ‘secret payments’, says Wyness
Reacting to the latest news, Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "A lot of people have said that the club is guilty of this, regardless of the change in ownership – and they should be given the ultimate sanction.
"There's then the other side, who say the owners have self-reported and they should be given some credit.
"I'm in the second camp.
"They've put some money aside for these sanctions, and I think it will end up being a financial punishment – rather than a sporting one, such as a points deduction.
"I think it's the right course of action.
"There is money put aside for this, and the Premier League – I expect – will come along and collect.
"We shall see where that money goes."
