Charlton and Reading are both potentially perfect clubs for American investors, according to Kieran Maguire.

Maguire picked out Charlton and Reading as his two clubs that he would look to invest in on his podcast the Price of Football.

Having been asked by a listener of the show who he would hypothetically choose to invest in, in the way that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney did with Wrexham, Maguire ran through a list of clubs and arrived at the two League One teams as his choices.

Maguire said (11.13): “Charlton because its a London club, third tier, got a decent sized stadium, its got a pretty good footprint as well in that part of London so it could easily get to the Premier league and get 20-25,000 (attendants) on the regular…

“The other club id be looking at, and I’m not saying this because I have a bit of an issue with the owner is Reading. Because they’re currently third tier, new stadium, premier league history, close to the motorways, you could sell it to an American investor, good links to Heathrow.”

American investment would take Reading back to the Premier League

Football Insider opinion

It has been quite the fall from grace for Reading who played three seasons in the Premier League between 2006 and 2013.

Having narrowly missed out on a return to the big time after defeat in the Championsip play-offs, the Royals, who were bought by Chinese businessman Dai Yongge and his sister Dai Xiu Li only weeks earlier, were about to see their dreams become a nightmare.

The club have suffered a relegation, a winding-up petition for unpaid taxes [BBC Sport], and points deductions for financial mismanagement, they are a side in desperate need of some good fortune.

Having seen so much success with their American investment, Wrexham have become the blueprint for what a side can do with a little bit of hope, and a lot of cash.

Wrexham owners Reynolds and McElhenney are aiming for another promotion this year

Reading have retained a big portion of their fanbase from their glory days and a return to the Premier League at some point is certainly not off the cards.

Reading are in the play-offs places and few new signings could be what they need to send them back up to the Championship.

Charlton are even further from their latest stint in the top flight which ended in 2007 and have been on an ownership rollercoaster of their own in recent years.

They currently sit in mid-table in League One under former Southampton boss Nathan Jones.

In other news, a Reading star could be on his way out of the club this January.
