"Let the market end" – Manager hopes Aston Villa ditch effort to sign his player

Perhaps it’s a good job Óscar Mingueza reportedly wasn’t pushing for a Celta Vigo exit this month, because Aston Villa later moved to take Levante’s Andrés García relatively quickly.

Celta Vigo should also be happy, because it was made clear repeatedly that they didn’t want to let the fullback go, and he could only leave if Aston Villa, or anyone else for that matter, paid his €20m buyout clause.

One party who will be annoyed that the transfer has collapsed is Barcelona, who would have received 50% of that €20m had the move gone through. Such an amount would have been a big boost for their winter market budget and, as the Catalan media repeatedly said, it would have provided a route to signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United.

La Voz de Galicia report Celta Vigo manager Claudio Giráldez as saying: “I think Mingueza wants to be here. He is happy, he is important for us and obviously I prefer that he does not move. Let the market end and there not be much movement.”

Almeria’s Marc Pubill is another right-back who Aston Villa were said to be looking at, and today’s edition of Diario de Almeria suggests interest will have been a confidence boost and helpful for the 21-year-old’s agents and their future planning.
