'Liverpool collapse danger: 4 days that could lose Premier League title to Arsenal'

Liverpool are well on course to claim the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season in charge at Anfield, but they are not there yet and recent developments have allowed doubt to creep in.
The Reds are currently 12 points clear at the top of the table, but with nine games of the regular season still to go, there is just about scope for that deficit to be overhauled by second-placed Arsenal.
Indeed things have started to go wrong for Liverpool in recent weeks, with their hopes of claiming other silverware disappearing.
A penalty shootout defeat to PSG knocked the Merseyside outfit out of the Champions League last week, and that was followed by more disappointment just a few days later, as a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final denied Slot the chance to get his hands on a first trophy in England.
Those defeats have been tough for the Liverpool squad to take, and will have the Anfield fanbase nervous about more potential slip-ups that could let their rivals back-in.
Arsenal must be ready to pounce in the title race
Each of the previous two seasons have of course seen Arsenal finish as runners up to Man City in the Premier League title race.
The Gunners will therefore be hugely frustrated that they have not been the side to take full advantage of the collapse of Pep Guardiola’s side this season.
As a result, if they are to be given any indication that Liverpool are going to open the door for them, they must be ready to move in and close the gap, and potentially overhaul the leaders.
With Gabriel Martinelli recently returning to action, and perhaps more importantly Bukayo Saka also nearing his return from injury, Arsenal are starting to get some of their attacking firepower back.
That may boost their chances of picking up the results they need to keep the pressure on Liverpool, although a 12 point gap means they would have to win four more games than their rivals just to go level, so surely winning out from this point is a must.
But with the fixtures that are still to come for the Merseyside outfit, those around the Emirates Stadium may feel that is far from an impossible task.
Liverpool may be concerned by their run-in
Everton, 2 April, Anfield
After the international break, Slot’s side will return to action with a Merseyside derby at Anfield on Wednesday 2 April.
Form often goes out of the window in such fixtures, as was proved by the dramatic ending between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park earlier this season.
Indeed, the Toffees have become a much harder team to beat since the return of David Moyes, and they will be desperate to derail the title bid of their local rivals, so a surprise defeat here would be a lot less of a shock than some.
Chelsea, 3 May, Stamford Bridge
Another that may concern the Reds is a trip to the capital where Chelsea await in early May, to face a rival that does not always hold happy memories when it comes to the title race (“he gave it to Demba Ba”).
With Enzo Maresca’s side still in the hunt for a Champions League place, they will be in mood to make that game an easy one for Slot and co.
Add in the pressure on them not to repeat those demons of the past, and that could lead to some nervous mistakes being made, even if Cole Palmer and friends have gone off the boil of late.
Arsenal, 10 May, Anfield
Just a week after that it will be Arsenal who make the trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, in a game the Gunners will for obvious reasons, be desperate to win.
Premier League position | Played | Points |
1. Liverpool | 29 | 70 |
2. Arsenal | 29 | 58 |
The Merseysiders were arguably fortunate to get a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at The Emirates, and know that will be no easy task against a side determined to put the pressure on them for their own good.
Given Mikel Arteta may have a stronger side to call on at that point as well as players return from injury, this will certainly be a tough ask for the hosts against their nearest rivals.
Brighton, AMEX Stadium, 18 May
The penultimate fixture of the season sees, Liverpool make a long trip south to face Brighton, who also need points in the European race, so will have motivation to take points off Slot’s side.
Fabian Hurzeler’s men have proven a threat for the big name teams this season, beating both Manchester clubs, Bournemouth and Tottenham on home soil, while holding Arsenal home and away.
As a result, they will have reasons to be confident they can put a jolt in the Reds’ title pursuit as well, along with that incentive to do so.
Even beyond that, Fulham who have a good recent record against the Reds, and Crystal Palace, could pose threats for Slot’s side.
Meanwhile, there may also be concerns over whether the speculation on Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a distraction as their contracts run down.
All of that means that after the last two games showed Liverpool may be susceptible to the demands of the season, Arsenal may yet have some hope that they can pull a remarkable comeback in the title race.
