Liverpool news: The reason for Salah and Van Dijk contract hold-ups revealed

Liverpool have yet to receive clarity about the futures of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the length of the contracts on offer has caused delays in talks over possible extensions for the two star players.
Salah, 32, and Van Dijk, 33, remain key players in Arne Slot’s plans but are demanding longer contracts than the club are prepared to offer.
This is because Liverpool are operating with a policy where they will not offer long-term contracts to players over the age of 30 – regardless of their place in the squad.
As things stand, both are set to leave Liverpool upon the expiry of their current deals in June with no shortage of interest from elite clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Paul Robinson previously told Football Insider that Al-Hilal are leading the race for Salah, while industry expert Mick Brown revealed Bayern Munich have opened talks with Van Dijk.
Salah and Van Dijk to make Liverpool decisions after the season ends
Football Insider revealed on 9 February that none of Salah, Van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold are any closer to signing new terms with Liverpool.
This has led to increased speculation about their futures as Liverpool continue to close in on the Premier League title despite recent disappointments.
While the Reds’ exits from both the Champions League and Carabao Cup have been a competitive blow, their contract negotiations are not thought to have been affected.
Both Salah and Van Dijk will likely decide their futures following the end of the season as Liverpool remain determined to come to agreements with their star men.
However, Robinson told Football Insider that Alexander-Arnold has signed Real Madrid's contract offer and looks set to leave Anfield when his current deal expires in June.
Ibrahima Konate contract update emerges at Anfield
Alongside the potential new deals for Salah and Van Dijk, Liverpool have also been aiming to agree terms with Ibrahima Konate before the summer window opens.
The France international is current set to see his deal expire in 2026, and Football Insider revealed Liverpool haven’t made progress in Konate contract talks.
The Reds are determined to avoid being stuck in a similar situation to that of their current three out-of-contract stars, as Andy Robertson’s deal will also expire in 2026.
Football Insider first revealed that Liverpool had opened talks with Konate in October, but they are still no closer to agreeing terms over an extension.
