Liverpool are unlikely to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Reds would prefer to lose the 26-year-old for free at the end of the season rather than lose a vital player mid-season.

Alexander-Arnold remains an important part of Arne Slot’s team and is seen as “huge” to their Premier League title hopes, taking an early exit off the table.

This comes as the Spanish giants stepped up their efforts to sign the right-back, with a potential “huge” £20million move in the works in the January window.

Instead, they are likely to be made to wait until the end of the season when he will be allowed to leave for free upon the expiry of his contract at Anfield.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of Alexander-Arnold and are keen to make him their latest Galactico signing following Dani Carvajal’s serious injury blow.

His close relationship with Jude Bellingham is also expected to play a key role in any agreement amid constant speculation over his future at Liverpool.

Real Madrid are now widely expected to wrap up a deal for Alexander-Arnold to agree a pre-contract and make the move upon the expiry of his contract in July.

However, the months of speculation over his future as well as that of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk has been an unnecessary distraction of Liverpool’s own making.

Despite the Reds having always been keen to tie their star players down to new deals, leaving it until the final year of their contracts significantly weakened their position.

Now, they look set to lose at least one of their most important players for free despite the early success of Slot’s tenure as manager as they continue their push for silverware.

Liverpool remain in all four competitions as things stand and are eyeing a potentially historic season, with Alexander-Arnold still a key part of those short-term plans.

In other news, Liverpool have ‘concrete’ interest in Morgan Gibbs-White.
