Liverpool tasted Wembley Stadium disappointment on Sunday (16 March) as they were defeated in the EFL Cup final, but supporters took one glimmer of positivity from the fixture.

It proved to be a game to forget for Arne Slot's men as Newcastle dominated the game from start to finish as they won 2-1.

Dan Burn gave his team the lead on the stroke of halftime before Alexander Isak doubled it in the 52nd minute, putting Eddie Howe's men in a commanding position.

Federico Chiesa gave the Reds a glimmer of hope in the dying embers of the game as he scored in the 94th minute, but it was too late for Liverpool to kick on and take the match any further.

The defeat rounded out a forgettable week for the club after being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG in their previous match.

Liverpool now have a significant match on the horizon to turn things around when they face Everton in the Premier League on 2 April.

Arne Slot provided a rare opportunity in the EFL Cup final

Slot made multiple substitutions throughout the EFL Cup final in a bid to change the game, which included him being given a rare opportunity to Chiesa.

The 27-year-old joined Liverpool in the summer on a deal worth £10million, but he has found opportunities hard to come by since moving to Anfield.
