A VITAL motorway used by 120,000 drivers per day has been closed following a “serious crash” – with hundreds of people stranded.

Photos show drivers and passengers stood on grass verges, sat on the central reservation barrier and even playing football amid the lengthy delays.

It comes as motorists have endured travel chaos over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The M6 southbound is shut between junction 34 for Lancaster and junction 33 for Galgate.

Traffic has been held on the northbound carriageway to allow the North West Air Ambulance to land.

Diversions are in place southbound.

Hundreds of people have got out of cars and are lined up on the motorway
