Man City star Jack Grealish has congratulated former Aston Villa teammate Conor Hourihane after he retired from playing to become the new assistant manager at Barnsley.
Hourihane, 33, retired from playing at Barnsley with immediate effect to turn his hand to coaching, with the club making the announcement on Friday (December 20).
The former central midfielder ended his career having made 583 professional appearances since moving to England from the Republic of Ireland as a youngster.
Hourihane played league football for Plymouth Argyle, Barnsley, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, and Derby County, while also earning 36 caps for his country.
Grealish, 29, and Hourihane spent five years together at Villa, earning promotion back to the Premier League as teammates back in 2018-19.
Jack Grealish struggling at Man City as torrid run of form continues
The winger has failed to nail down a starting spot under Guardiola, starting nine of his 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring zero goals, and providing two assists in 850 minutes of action.
Grealish has now gone over a full year without scoring for his club, with his last goal coming in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on December 16th, 2023.
The England international took to Instagram to send Hourihane a message after the announcement, saying: “What a career and what a man! All the best on retirement brother.”
Man City have won just one of their last 11 games across all competitions, marking their worst run of form since Pep Guardiola took over back in 2016.
Guardiola’s side have fallen out of the top-four and now face the very real threat of elimination from the Champions League, sitting in 22nd with PSG up next.
