Man City are preparing a sensational move to sign Bruno Guimaraes in the January transfer window as they look to resolve their recent issues.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that City will look to sign a big-name player to strengthen in midfield.
Football Insider revealed on 19 December that Newcastle will not entertain offers for Guimaraes in the January window as they will not let him leave mid-season.
However, Robinson has claimed that Newcastle’s financial struggles could see them tempted into a surprise sale amid concerns about their FFP and PSR standings.
The Magpies were forced to sell players in the summer in an attempt to balance the books, and are not expected to be capable of spending big in January as a result.
Meanwhile, the former England man insisted the Brazilian has struggled to connect with Sandro Tonali in Eddie Howe’s system, raising issues for the side.
This may provide Man City with the opportunity to land a deal for the 27-year-old if they can make an offer that would benefit Newcastle financially.
Man City eye big-money Bruno Guimaraes move amid FFP twist
Newcastle are reluctant to lose any of their star players mid-season and are instead looking to improve their squad, but financial concerns could see them tempted by a big-money offer.
Robinson has insisted City could look to test the Magpies’ resolve as they prioritise a move to strengthen their midfield options with a big name given their recent struggles.
“If they go for a player in January, they’re going to have to make a difference,” he told Football Insider.
“It’s going to have to be a big player.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try to exploit Newcastle’s recent FFP and PSR issues with a bid for Bruno Guimaraes.
“Tonali and Guimaraes have struggled playing together, he’s tried to play them in a 4-3-3 and it’s not worked, so you wonder about their situation.
“That’s the type of player City will be looking to sign to strengthen their team.
“With the injuries they’ve got, I do expect them to go into the market in January whether that will be to sign a defensive midfielder or a centre-back.
“Watch this space as far as Man City are concerned, don’t rule them out of anything just yet.”
