Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card in the 61st minute for a reckless lunge on Mikel Merino.
As a result, United saw out the rest of normal time and the additional 30 minutes of extra-time a player down.
The Portuguese full-back will now be suspended for Thursday’s Premier League clash with Southampton.
However, he will be available to return to action for the visit of Brighton on Sunday.
Dalot’s two cautions were amongst eight bookings shown by referee Andy Madley.
Of those, six were shown to United players, landing the club a £75,000 fine.
Clubs are sanctioned for receiving six or more bookings in a match, with the fine increasing by £25,000 each time it occurs in a season.
Sunday’s match was the third time United have received six cards in a single fixture this term.
As well as Dalot’s two bookings, Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire were all also cautioned.

However, Altay Bayindir saved from Martin Odegaard before denying Kai Havertz during the shootout to help his side to victory.
United’s previous fines for yellow cards picked up against Tottenham in September and Chelsea two months later.
During the 3-0 home defeat to Spurs, the Red Devils received five yellow cards as well as a straight red card for Fernandes.
Meanwhile, their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford in November saw six of their players cautioned.
Amongst them were stoppage time bookings for Martinez and Amad Diallo.
