Reece James took to social media after finally making his return to Chelsea in their 5-0 FA Cup victory over Morecambe.
The 25-year-old had been sidelined for much of the season, with just four Premier League appearances and 241 minutes of play prior to this match.
However, James started against Morecambe and provided an assist, which left fans in awe of his performance.
He shared three images from the match on Instagram. Teammate Marc Cucurella was among those who commented on James’ post, saying "I miss you”. The full-back partnership of James and Cucurella made its long-awaited return in this match.
James then playfully tagging goalscorer Tosin Adarabioyo in his story. He captioned it: "Since when could you shoot?" following his brace.
Chelsea need star players like Reece James fit in crucial month ahead
With James’ absence, players like Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong have stepped up in place of the right-back.
Rumours have circulated about a potential exit for the captain. His future has been looking increasingly uncertain due to his ongoing injury struggles.
Acheampong made his full debut on 4 January, and pundits like Paul Merson were left impressed by his performance.
However, James reminded both the coach and fans of his quality, proving once again that his talent cannot be overlooked.
Enzo Maresca has shown he is willing to make tough decisions with players he doesn't see fit into the team. For example, his treatment of Ben Chilwell. Fans have even taken note of the way Chilwell has been treated after his latest press conference.
Yet, it's unlikely that James will face the same fate. His recurring hamstring injuries have been a major concern over the years, but it will ultimately be up to the coach and the board to decide whether the risk of his injuries is worth keeping him at the club.
In other news, a Premier League club are plotting a move to sign Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the January transfer window.
