Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has thanked the fans for their support after “ending the year with a win” having beaten Ipswich 1-0 on Friday (December 27).

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Mikel Arteta’s side leapfrogged Chelsea into second and went six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Arsenal were able to see off an early scare that saw Ipswich forward Sammie Szmodics come within inches of scoring from a deflected Leif Davis cross.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute, latching on to Leandro Trossard’s low cross to tap the ball into an open net.

The North London club continued to pile the pressure on the visitors but were unable to get another goal. Ultimately it didn’t matter, and Arsenal ended the year with three points in the bag.

The Norway international has been key for Arsenal so far this season, starting 13 of his 15 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing five assists in 1114 minutes of action.

Arsenal star Martin Odegaard rallies the troops after Bukayo Saka ruled out for ‘months’.

Odegaard missed 12 matches for Arsenal after picking up an ankle injury while on international with Arsenal going undefeated in 11 since his return having won seven, drawn three, and lost two in the games without the attacking midfielder.

Speaking in his press conference after the win over Ipswich, Arteta confirmed that “it’s not looking good” for fellow key player Bukayo Saka after he picked up a hamstring injury in their 5-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Arteta said: “He had a procedure. Everything went well, but unfortunately, he will be out for many, many weeks. I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer.

“It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, the mobility of that. Let’s see, it’s very difficult to say.”

Saka has been Arsenal’s main attacking threat this season, providing 15 goal contributions in his 16 Premier League appearances.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport, former player turned pundit Matt Holland believes Saka’s injury could be more significant than Odegaard’s.

Odegaard took to Instagram after the win over Ipswich to thank the fans and let them know the team will be working towards an even better 2025.

The fans will be there for the club in the new year even if Saka can’t be as they prepare for a trip across London to face Brentford on New Year’s Day (January 1).

Arteta will no doubt be hoping Saka’s injury won’t have the same effect as Odegaard’s did with a tricky set of fixtures in January, including a North London Derby against Tottenham, awaiting them.
