Mohamed Salah endured one of his most difficult afternoons in Liverpool colours during their heartbreaking Carabao Cup final defeat.

The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Despite Federico Chiesa’s stoppage-time strike, goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak secured the trophy for the Magpies – Newcastle’s first domestic honour in 70 years.

Salah, who has scored 32 goals this season, started for Arne Slot’s side as he looked to continue his stellar season in front of goal.

However, the Egyptian struggled to get involved down the right-hand side during the 90 minutes.

He even produced an unwanted first after being unable to get on the scoresheet.

Salah failed to attempt a single shot or create a chance for a teammate during the match.

It is the first time in his Liverpool career that the 32-year-old has done neither in a single match.

He had registered at least one of them in each of his previous 391 appearances since signing for the club in 2017.

Gary Neville was left perplexed by Salah’s lack of threat or involvement during the match.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage, the co-commentator admitted: “I’ve never seen Mo Salah as quiet as I have in this game.

“He has had three touches, 25 minutes into this second half.”

Meanwhile, Salah has now failed to score in consecutive matches having done the same in midweek.

The forward was unable to find the net in Tuesday’s Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, he was the only Liverpool player to score during the penalty shootout.

Salah is currently enjoying the best season of his career as he nears the end of his contract at Anfield.

Despite his two-match goal drought, the former Roma and Chelsea man has scored 32 goals and added 22 assists in 43 matches across all competitions.

He could still extend his Liverpool stay beyond the summer, though.

The deal he signed back in 2022, however, is still set to expire at the end of June.

Salah will have to wait for the chance to recapture his scoring form, with Liverpool next in action against Everton on April 2.
