Mykhailo Mudryk’s positive drugs test is suspected to be a possible attempt to sabotage the Chelsea man, The Athletic have reported.

The winger confirmed on Tuesday (17 December) that a banned substance was found in a testing sample he provided to the FA, meaning he could now be facing a long suspension from the game.

Mudryk though, has insisted that has never knowingly taken a banned substance or broken any rules and is hopeful he can return to playing soon.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca meanwhile has confirmed that the club “support and trust” Mudryk amid these revelations (BBC Sport).

However, people familiar with the case say the player’s stance is that he did not intentionally the banned substance – meldonium – and there is a “suspicion” he was sabotaged.

The Athletic though note that they have been unable to verify these claims for themselves.

It would obviously put things into a whole different light if it was proved that the results of this test were as a result of Mudryk being sabotaged.

There has already been plenty of speculation about what course of action Chelsea might take depending on the outcome of this investigation.

If however it is confirmed that this has happened as a result of the winger being set-up he would very much be an innocent party in all this.

That would then surely put him in the clear to return to playing football as soon as possible once things are resolved.

In such circumstances there would likely be the issue of action to potentially be taken against anyone who may have attempted to set the Chelsea man up.

One thing that is clear though is that with all the scope for legal challenges and appeals, this is not an issue that is going to be resolved quickly.

In other news, Chelsea fans have laid into Jamie Carragher over his recent comments.
