'Newcastle to loan out striker as Callum Wilson set new contract opportunity'

24/04/2025 16:30
Newcastle United have given Callum Wilson an ultimatum over his future at the club with another striker set to depart in the summer.
The 33-year-old has struggled for both form and fitness across the course of this season, and is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
As a result, there has been an expectation that Wilson will leave Newcastle in the summer when that deal comes to an end.
Now though it appears as though there is a chance the striker could yet still be at St James’ Park for at least the 2025/26 campaign.
William Osula to make way for Callum Wilson
Back in the summer, the Magpies completed the signing of William Osula on a long-term deal from Sheffield United.
However, the 21-year-old has not played regularly for Eddie Howe‘s side during his debut campaign with the club.
As a result, the Telegraph have now reported that Osula is set to be loaned out by Newcastle for next season, in order to give him more experience in senior football.

Because of that, Wilson has apparently been told by the Magpies to prove in the final games of this season that he is worthy of a new contract at St James’ Park.
That is due to the fact that Newcastle do not want to leave themselves short on options in attack next season, even as they target a new centre-forward in the summer transfer window.
Amid huge interest in Alexander Isak that the Magpies are expected to strongly resist a free-transfer exit for the injury-hit Wilson appeared likely, but extending his time with the club remains on the table.
Newcastle United challenge is a big one for veteran striker
Football Insider Verdict
It is not going to be easy for Wilson to prove he is worthy of a new deal with the Magpies in the final weeks of this season.
Newcastle are of course still very much in the picture to qualify for the Champions League, which has to be the priority in the next few weeks.
As a result, Howe must play his strongest side for now, meaning Isak will surely get the nod ahead of Wilson in those games.
That means it is unlikely that the 33-year-old is going to get as many opportunities to show he deserves a new contract as he might need.
Of course, with Newcastle targeting other strikers such as Liam Delap at Ipswich, Wilson will be even down the pecking order next season if he stays at St James’ Park.
There may therefore also be questions to be asked about whether the striker will want to earn an extension with the Magpies for next season.
