'Newcastle to make Calvert-Lewin U-turn'

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury history and barren spells of form will make Newcastle United steer clear of signing him this summer, according to Paul Robinson.
The Everton striker is set to become a free agent as his contract at Goodison Park heads for expiry on 30 June, and an injury suffered against Brighton in January has all-but ended yet another below-par season.
Football Insider revealed back in January that Newcastle wanted to sign Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer with Callum Wilson set to leave the club, but his latest setback has cast doubt over any potential deal.
Now, former England goalkeeper Robinson has told Football Insider he’d be baffled if Newcastle maintain their interest in Calvert-Lewin, with huge question marks over both his fitness and form.
Calvert-Lewin managed just three goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season prior to his injury, and with Everton unlikely to offer new terms, Newcastle will also exercise caution before doing so themselves.
Newcastle told to run a mile from Calvert-Lewin
Everton’s chances of cashing in on Calvert-Lewin in January were brought to a halt by his season-ending injury, and it remains to be seen how many clubs will want to sign him on a free transfer this summer.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Robinson argued that Calvert-Lewin wouldn’t be a smart signing for many clubs, suggesting there’s only one reason why Newcastle may still be keen on him.
"Injury history, lack of form – sign a striker that doesn’t score goals? I can’t really see why they do that in all honesty”, he told Football Insider.
“The quality is there no doubt, early on in his Everton career – Everton are [now] going to allow him to move on, and there’s a reason that Everton are going to allow him to move on.
“You can’t have a backup striker – which is what he will be at Newcastle – who’s not always fit, and who needs a run of games to get any kind of form going.
“It’s going to be a difficult one – he’s been linked heavily with Newcastle, [but] I think it’s because he’s on a free.”
Newcastle must aim higher than Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Calvert-Lewin would indeed be a low-risk signing for Newcastle given he’s available for free on relatively low wages, but his recent form and injuries mean it’d also be a low-reward acquisiton at St. James’ Park.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he anticipates Newcastle looking elsewhere before opting to pursue Calvert-Lewin this summer; with Wilson already injury-prone enough.
The 27-year-old reuniting with Sheffield United if the Blades win promotion would be a much more appropriate move for Calvert-Lewin to make, allowing Newcastle to try and find a striker who they’ll be able to rely on as Alexander Isak’s backup.
