Signed for £8 million, the memories he contributed to are priceless. Andy Robertson is a Liverpool Legend now is entering his 8th year at the club. Do his recent performances land him a contract or is next season destined to be his last.
Beloved by Fans
Who would’ve thought that the young Scottish Left Back who joined Liverpool from Hull for such an insignificant fee would become one of the club’s most beloved players. Andy Robertson has won all there is to win at Liverpool.
Now on course for his 2nd Premier League title. His list of trophies with Liverpool includes:
- 2018–19 UEFA Champions League
- 2019 UEFA Super Cup
- 2019 FIFA Club World Cup
- 2019–20 Premier League
- 2020 FA Community Shield
- 2021–22 FA Cup
- 2021–22 EFL Cup (Carabao Cup)
- 2022 FA Community Shield
- 2022–23 EFL Cup (Carabao Cup)
His light-hearted and endearing nature off the pitch is in complete contrast to his performance on the field.
The desire and indominable spirit, fighting for every ball and busting his lungs up and down that Liverpool left flank epitomised him as a player.
A man of the people. Humble and self-aware of his own limitations and yet, gives it his all each and every time he wears that Liverpool shirt. A player that takes nothing for granted.
Andy Robertson is now in his 8th year at the club. As painful as it may be, nothing lasts forever. Are we seeing warning signs of a drop off?
Drop Off or Tactical Changes
Liverpool have had an incredible first season under Arne Slot.
The team sit comfortably top of the Premier League with the majority of players seeing improvements in their match performances this season compared to last.
For some players however that is not the case. Andy Robertson has not always been a beneficiary of Slot’s tactical changes.
Decline in Attacking Output
Andy Robertson was signed to fit Jurgen Klopp’s offensive approach with the Full Backs.
They were expected to be offensively minded, link with the Forwards and deliver crosses into the box and then to return to their defensive duties. Andy Robertson performed this role masterfully over the 7 years prior to Arne Slot’s arrival.
In this time under Klopp he registered an impressive 55 Premier League Assists, with his personal best of 12 in a single campaign in 2019/20.
This approach with Full Backs has been replaced with a more measured and reserved defensive structure under Slot. When analysing the performances of both Trent And Robertson this season, we can clearly see the difference.
Both Full Backs have had Attacking output decline significantly.
As much criticism as Andy Robertson has received, it just goes to show that it’s not all down to age and decline. Slot’s tactics have certainly impacted his numbers.
Arne Slot’s Big Summer
Arne Slot will have his preferred tactical system in mind for next season. The implementation of such a system will require signings to fit.
Players such as Milos Kerkez have been linked to replace the Scotsman. Signings like this would certainly add more youth and dynamism into the side. However, would funds be better served elsewhere.?
Liverpool will almost certainly need a new Right Back amid the Trent Alexander-Arnold saga. There is major uncertainty surrounding Salah and Van Dijk. Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota have both been underwhelming in recent times.
Now with a big summer approaching, Arne Slot and Richard Hughes will have major decisions to make.
Do Liverpool sign a new Left Back this summer or do they put their trust in Andy Robertson in his final year of contract.
Expiry 2026
At this moment, it is difficult to see Liverpool offering the Scotland International a new deal. That is simply the reality of the way the club handles contract extensions.
Seeing the Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk situation, Robertson must find himself with no illusions about his future.
Those two are some of the greatest players in the clubs recent history with little decline in contribution and the club is reluctant to extend their contracts.
Despite him being a potentially useful and experienced squad option even past 2026. That option seems unlikely given how the Liverpool Board have been seen to operate in relation to players over 30 years of age.
It’s not hard to see why Andy Robertson looks certain to leave next summer.
A Legend that will forever remain in the hearts of the fans. It would be a joy to see Andy Robertson have a strong final season in which he performs to the standards he expects of himself.
That would be a fitting farewell to a player who’s given everything to the Football Club.
