Erik ten Hag is under a lot of pressure right now at Manchester United.

The Red Devils sit 13th in the Premier League, and after a demoralising defeat against Tottenham on Sunday, serious questions are being asked of the Dutchman.

Indeed, there's already been plenty of chat about who could potentially replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has responded to a caller who has suggested that Wayne Rooney could be the answer for Manchester United.

As you can imagine, Sutton wasn't sold on the idea of United appointing Rooney, claiming that it would be the wrong move at this moment in time.

Wayne Rooney is wrong for Manchester United

Sutton responded when asked about Rooney getting the United job.

"Wayne Rooney, absolutely, I mean, come on, Ten Hag has lost it. Rooney is down there at Plymouth, he's had a rough start, but they won, he knows the club, he's played under Fergie, he's a United legend get him in," The caller said.

"You say get Rooney in, but he's had a rough start at Plymouth and things didn't work at Birmingham, he did a decent job at Arsenal, but that's your heart talking not your head," Sutton said.

"He wants Wayne Rooney, do you agree with that Chris?" Robbie Savage asked.

"Not at this time no, it's a no, not at this time," Sutton said.

Wayne Rooney should be nowhere near the Manchester United job

Sutton was very polite when he said that this isn't the right time for Rooney to get the Manchester United job, but the reality is that he should be nowhere near this role.

The former striker is a United legend, but, with all due respect, he's not a great manager.

Birmingham City were relegated last season due to Rooney's terrible spell in charge, Derby County were also relegated under his management, while Plymouth aren't exactly lighting up the Championship this season.

The Manchester United job should go to a top manager, not someone who has failed time and time again at Championship level.
