'No consistency': Gabriel Agbonlahor says Wolves player should have been sent off in 2-1 defeat vs Man City

Wolves delivered a spirited display against Manchester City at Molineux on Sunday.

Gary O’Neil – whose job is safe for now, TBR Football understands – watched his side come within seconds of earning a valuable point against Pep Guardiola’s champions, only for John Stones to pop up with a 95th minute winner.

The result keeps Wolves – who went ahead in the seventh minute thanks to Jorgen Strand Larsen – bottom of the Premier League and without a win in eight games.

While Wolves can be proud of themselves for frustrating an elite side in Manchester City, Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks the Citizens actually should have been playing against ten men for most of the game.

Gabriel Agbonlahor says Toti Gomes should have been sent off against Manchester City

Agbonlahor – who is not exactly the most popular man in Wolverhampton, having made 391 appearances for rivals Aston Villa – feels Toti Gomes should have been handed two yellow cards in quick succession by Chris Kavanagh.

The Wolves No.24 was booked in the 14th minute for a clumsy foul on Savinho, which gave Manchester City a promising freekick in a dangerous area.

However, Toti then kicked the ball away.

Writing on X (previously known as Twitter), Agbonlahor claimed that the Portuguese defender should have been another yellow card on top of the one for his foul, due to delaying the restart.

The 38-year-old stated: “Toti makes foul then kicks ball away?? That's a double yellow??? No consistency var!!”

There is certainly an argument to be had on this matter, as Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard have already been dismissed for similar offences earlier this season.

However, no Manchester City player looked eager to take a quick freekick – instead slowly setting up to have a shot at Jose Sa’s goal – which perhaps saved Toti on this occasion.

Wolves must keep their heads up

To lose a precious point with seconds to go will undoubtedly devastate O’Neil and Wolves fans alike, but there were many positives to take.

Firstly, Wolves proved they can set up to frustrate even the most fearsome opponent, which should help to squeeze a few points from other clashes against the traditional ‘Big Six’ over the course of the season.

Furthermore, the return of a five-man defence with wing-backs made Wolves look a lot more threatening on the counter attack, giving O’Neil a blueprint to build on as he aims to drag the Old Gold up the Premier League.

Hopefully, Wolves stay positive – if they play like this every week, they should win more than they lose.
