A BBC pundit has named who he thinks the ‘greatest’ player to ever play for Leicester City is.

Leicester City, in their 140-year history, have played host to numerous talented players across several eras.

The Martin O’Neil period is regarded as one of the best eras the club have ever experienced, as City cemented themselves as a top-half Premier League side.

O’Neil also guided The Foxes to two League Cup triumphs in 1997 and 1999, defeating Middlesbrough and Tranmere Rovers.

Indeed the infamous title-winning team in 2016 hosted some of the best players in Leicester’s history and one BBC pundit has named a player from Claudio Ranieri’s side as the ‘greatest’ to play for the club.

Following Jamie Vardy‘s 20-goal haul this season, which has helped Leicester back to the Premier League, there have been many suggestions that he is the best player to ever play for the club.

It’s certainly hard to argue against it – Vardy has netted 190 goals across 463 appearances, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, two Championship titles and the Community Shield.

But, BBC pundit John Bennett took to X and shared a different view to many, saying: “On talent alone, Mahrez is the greatest I’ve seen wear a Leicester shirt.

“But Vardy is the most iconic player. One of the key factors in a rollercoaster 10 years for the club. (Having said that, my favourite ever Leicester player is and will remain Steve Thompson).”

Jamie Vardy’s longevity edges it

As Bennett said, Mahrez is the most talented player in Foxes history but Vardy’s longevity and loyalty set him apart from the rest.

The veteran forward has been at the club for 12 years, having arrived in 2012 in a £1m deal from Fleetwood Town.

Vardy rejected offers from Arsenal after winning the title in 2016 and has pledged his long-term future to the club on multiple occasions, despite interest from elsewhere.

Even last summer, following the club’s relegation, he remained and has been one of the catalysts to returning to the top-flight at the first time of asking.

A true Leicester legend.
