Oxford United should not appeal the red card given to Tyler Goodrham during their FA Cup defeat to Exeter City, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that referee Scott Oldham was in a perfect position to send the attacker off for an elbow during that defeat.

Gary Rowett saw his Championship side upset by League One opposition with a 3-1 defeat to Exeter in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday (11 January).

Oxford were also dealt a blow late on with the dismissal of Goodrham, and despite some reactions, Hackett believes they can have no arguments about the decision.

Oxford United sent clear appeal message over Tyler Goodrham red card

With 81 minutes on the clock and his side already trailing 3-1, Goodrham looked to break forward inside the Exeter half as he aimed to get his team back into the game.

As he did so though, the Oxford man found himself being pulled back by opposition midfielder Jake Richards.

In an attempt to break free of that pressure, Goodrham threw at an arm which caught the 17-year-old close to his face.

With Richards then going down theatrically, referee Oldham elected to send off the U’s midfielder, to the surprise and frustration of many connected to the Championship club.

Speaking to Football Insider about the incident though, Hackett dismissed any complaints from those of an Oxford persuasion, saying:

“I think the referee’s in a great position, he’s seen it, that’s a red. He’s lashed out, I don’t think he’s left the referee any option.

“He’s right on it, he’s in a good position, I hope they don’t appeal it because if they appeal it they’ll lose.”

Oxford now turn their attention back to Championship business, as they travel to Home Park to face Plymouth – now managed by former Cercle Brugge boss Miron Muslic – on Tuesday (14 January).

Goodrham, who has scored 18 goals in 125 appearances for the club to date and played a key role in their promotion from League One last season, now looks set to be banned for that game.

In other news, Wycombe are expecting more bids from Championship clubs for Joe Low.
