Paul Merson left Simon Thomas stunned while discussing the much-anticipated Champions League clash between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

Mikel Arteta‘s side are potentially just three matches away from lifting an incredible piece of silverware this season, even despite Arne Slot’s Liverpool set to clinch the Premier League title.

Ligue 1 champions, PSG, stand in their way and first welcome the French side to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, 29 April, having convincingly claimed a 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid in the last round.

There is some controversy building ahead of the game, however, with Arsenal potentially facing punishment from UEFA as PSG supporters struggle to get tickets ahead of the trip to England.

Tickets are seemingly an issue for many of the Gunners, too, and Merson, who has been unable to purchase a seat for the clash, has refused to undercut his fellow supporters.

Arsenal v PSG tickets a cause for concern in Champions League clash

Speaking live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (26 April, 12:14pm), Merson said: “Huge game next week, huge game. Arsenal haven’t won the Champions League before, they can’t win the Premier League…”

Thomas asked: “Are you going?” to which Merson replied: “No, I’m not going, no. I can’t get tickets.”

Thomas was left shocked by this, replying: “Really!? Wow!” and Merson continued: “I’m one of them, Si, if I can’t get tickets I don’t go to the games. It’s not right that I should be at the game if Arsenal fans who go week in, week out can’t get a ticket. I’d never do that.”

The Sky Sports host applauded the sentiment, saying: “Good point, yep, love it.”

Mikel Arteta completes U-turn at the Emirates Stadium

Football Insider verdict

Just a few weeks ago, Arteta was under severe pressure from Arsenal supporters, who were growing frustrated and impatient at the lack of silverware under the Spaniard’s reign.

And with PSG, Barcelona, and Inter Milan still left in the competitions, lifting the Champions League title is absolutely no guarantee, but fans have started to believe in their manager once again.

It is the race for the Premier League title which has caused the most anger at the Emirates, with the Gunners falling 12 points behind the league leaders, and barely any fightback shown.

Winning just one of their last four league matches is certainly not good enough for a team wanting to win the league title, but with the Champions League the main focus now, it is more than understandable.

The manager has more than proven himself the right candidate to lead Arsenal forward, albeit having a few frustrating seasons at the helm, and this could be the start of something even more impressive.
