Over the weekend, multiple reports from the Portuguese media made it clear Manu Silva was on his way to Wolves, in a deal which would bring Vitória de Guimarães around €10-12m.
The 23-year-old signed from Feirense and has played 28 matches so far this season. Despite playing as a defensive midfielder, he’s found the back of the net four times and added two assists.
Monday sees Manu Silva become an even bigger story in Portugal.
The young midfielder is splashed across A Bola‘s front page on Monday, and the big update is that Benfica have snatched him from Wolves’ clutches.
A Bola report the Lisbon club have beaten Wolves and will be paying €12m plus a potential further €2m in bonus payments. Vitória de Guimarães will also get 20% from any profit on a future transfer.
Wolves’ offer was €10m plus €2m in bonuses, and Manu Silva was ‘one step away’ from joining Vítor Pereira’s side. Even Vitória de Guimarães thought their player was signing for Wolves until Benfica burst in.
O Jogo report that despite Wolves’ offer being accepted, Benfica simply offered a little more so that was also immediately accepted.
Manu Silva is said to have had his head turned from Wolves by the prospect of Champions League football and playing at the Club World Cup this summer.
A victory of sorts for Bruno Lage.
