Ange Postecoglou should keep his job as Tottenham manager and was right to criticise Timo Werner for his performance against Rangers, Teddy Sheringham has said.

Spurs have endured a disappointing run of form recently, which has led to their manager’s position being called into question by a number of supporters.

A 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday (12 December) means it is now five games without a win in all competitions for the North London club.

Timo Werner endured a particularly difficult night at Ibrox and was heavily criticised by the Tottenham boss for his performance in that match.

Now, Sheringham has backed Postecoglou over both his position at the club, and his verdict on how Werner has played this season.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former striker who scored 124 goals in 277 appearances across two spells with Tottenham said: "In the main, every player is trying to implement what he [Postecoglou] wants out on the pitch..

"I don't see anyone shirking apart from Timo Werner. He's been poor whenever I've seen him this year.

"He needs to pull his finger out and realise what it is to be a professional footballer again and show some real umph because he looks like he’s going through the motions.

"I don't agree with Ange's coming out and saying it publicly but having said that, he needs to know what other people are thinking."

On the issue of whether Postecoglou should be kept on as Spurs boss, Sheringham added: "I'm here to back Ange this morning. I love what he's given Tottenham this year.

“I think over the last four or five years you've seen Tottenham under [Jose] Mourinho and [Antonio] Conte make one maybe two chances a game.

"I go to watch Tottenham now and I see them making ten chances in the first 15 minutes. I think it's exciting. I think any team would struggle without their two main centre halves and their main goalkeeper.

"I'm still excited and optimistic for Ange and the way he plays the game and I think they should stick with him."

Football Insider Opinion

There is perhaps a case to be made for Postecoglou being given more time in charge of Spurs going forward.

While they have been remarkably inconsistent this season, recent wins over Man City in particular have served as a reminder of just how good they can be.

It is also worth noting that Tottenham have had to deal with a number of significant injury problems this season to key players such as Cristian Romero, Mickey van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario.

As a result there may be enough mitigating factors to convince the board that Postecoglou does deserve more time to try and get things right.

Even so he has placed plenty of expectation on himself with comments about winning trophies this season which is something everyone at Tottenham will be desperate.

Consequently pressure will only continue to build on Postecoglou if they do not get the wins they need to put themselves in a position to win silverware sooner rather than later.

In other news, Spurs are working on a “big-money” signing for the January transfer window.
