Premier League told to 'change PSR rules to pave way for glorious Newcastle United era'

Newcastle United celebrated success at Wembley Stadium recently by winning the EFL Cup, but the club could still end up being restricted in terms of their progress by profit and sustainability rules.
The Magpies revealed their 2023-24 accounts recently which included a club-record turnover that soared from £250million to £320million, showcasing the positive steps that are being made behind the scenes.
However former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness revealed that Newcastle have "got to go even further to get that PSR room that they need."
Financial Year | Newcastle Revenue |
2023-24 | £320m |
2022-23 | £250m |
2021-22 | £180m |
2020-21 | £140m |
2019-20 | £153m |
The Magpies were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last summer to balance their books, which weakened their squad for this season.
Similar question marks are being asked about the club heading into the upcoming summer transfer window as to whether players will have to be sold, with Bruno Guimaraes potentially being someone the club might have to sell.
Football Insider revealed that Arsenal want to sign the Brazil international in the summer transfer window to strengthen their squad for next season.
‘Newcastle could sell Bruno Guimaraes‘
Speaking on the latest edition ofFootball Insider's Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson revealed he's "not so sure" the Palace midfielder is ready to replace Rodri in the City midfield.
"It’s no longer the stick that you can beat them with," Robinson said on Newcastle's EFL Cup win.
"All the attention will be turned to Tottenham now for the team that hasn’t won anything for so many years, there’s a lot of things that have been said about that Cup final, but it did feel different for Newcastle.
"They weren’t going there with hope, they weren’t going there praying that they were going to win, they were going there with a real optimism.
"There was a business-like performance about them, and that in itself shows where they’ve come and where they’ve developed as a team under Eddie Howe.
"What that does for them going forward, they’ve still got the annoyance of FFP and PSR.
"They’re owned by a Gulf state, but they’re owned by one of the richest people in the world, the sustainability is not a problem for Newcastle.
"The rules have to be looked at, it has to be adapted because they’ve had one of the best periods of their history, certainly in my lifetime anyway, and now everyone’s talking about, can they hold on to Bruno?
"Newcastle have won this trophy, what type of players from around the world are they going to attract and who are they going to bring in?
"And that for me is just the most frustrating thing from an outsider looking in as well.
"There’s got to be some kind of adaption to the rules that allows this money to come into football and allows football clubs to grow because Newcastle like other clubs they’re having to sell top young talent. We should be talking about a glorious new era."
Newcastle must make a decision on Alexander Isak
Selling players might be Newcastle's way of navigating PSR as they have done in the past, and Alexander Isak is currently their top commodity within the squad.
Football Insider revealed that Arne Slot wants to sign Isak for Liverpool as he attempts to strengthen his attacking options, and selling him could provide the Magpies with some freedom in the transfer window.
However, Newcastle are set to showcase their commitment to him as they are currently preparing to double Isak's wages in a stunning new contract that would extend his stay at St James' Park.
