Liverpool have had a very solid start to this season as they sit second in the Premier League.

The Reds look as though they could be on course to challenge for the title this season, but, as ever, it only takes one or two problems to unsettle a squad.

Writing in his column for SportsKeeda, Paul Merson has been discussing Liverpool's chances this season, and while the pundit believes Arne Slot’s side are in good shape, he thinks that an injury to Virgil van Dijk could derail their season.

Indeed, Merson says that while Liverpool are well-stacked in attack, he's concerned about what an injury to Van Dijk would mean for this team.

Paul Merson worried about potential Virgil van Dijk injury

The pundit discussed Liverpool's season and what could go wrong with the £75m man.

"Liverpool have no problems with their front-three, everyone is firing. What they would want to avoid is injuries to midfielders or someone like Virgil van Dijk getting injured, that’s where the problems could lie for Liverpool," Merson said.

Virgil van Dijk is so important for Liverpool

Merson is right when he says that an injury to Van Dijk could affect Liverpool's season, and that just goes to show how important the Dutchman is to the club.

These comments only further serve to show how important it is that Liverpool sort out Van Dijk's new contract sooner rather than later.

Indeed, the defender is into the final year of his contract at Anfield, and Liverpool surely won't want to lose him.

Losing Van Dijk to injury is one thing, but letting him leave the club permanently is another.

Liverpool need to acknowledge how important Van Dijk is to this side and reward him with a new deal as soon as possible.
