'Radical change' needed for player to join Aston Villa – Feels like face-saving operation

Unai Emery and Aston Villa may be set for more transfer disappointment in their search for a defender as Juan Foyth appears likely to remain at Villarreal.

That's according to Estadio Deportivo, who report that the defender will not leave and will remain in La Liga until the end of the season.

They say that while the Argentine defender has been in the spotlight in the last few days as Aston Villa have bid strongly for him, this will not result in a move to Villa Park.

Their interest came directly from Unai Emery, who tried to sign the defender at PSG, eventually worked with him at Villarreal and wanted a reunion at Aston Villa.

The latter were willing to go all out for the Argentine however 'it seems that they have hit a wall' as Villarreal aren't keen on losing the defender at this point int eh window. While an offer was made and negotiations have taken place, it appears Foyth will remain in Spain. It would take a ‘radical change’ for him to end up at Aston Villa.

The newspaper insists that Aston Villa have not spoken to Foyth directly as no agreement was found with Villarreal. Only a 180-degree turn would see him now signing for Aston Villa.

Of course, there is plenty of time for that to change given Aston Villa are now empowered by the money they've received from Jhon Durán's move to Saudi Arabia.

The rejection could be a blessing in disguise anyway as Estadio point out that Foyth is still working on 'overcoming his injury problems', which have kept him out of training over the last few days too.

The Argentine has a shaky injury history to say the least and missed 19 games with a knee injury last year and 23 games between 2023 and 2024 with a shoulder injury.

That's not ideal to say the least, and given the struggle to reach an agreement, Aston Villa may be best turning their attention elsewhere.

Indeed, the Spanish media have reported repeatedly this week that it was Aston Villa going cold on the deal, so perhaps this is just an effort in face saving.
