Chelsea captain Reece James looks set to leave the London side after Josh Acheampong starred against Crystal Palace.
Acheampong is the latest graduate from the Blues’ esteemed academy and he wowed his clubs’ fans, as well as Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, on (4 January) in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
The youngster played out of position at centre-back, but still impressed alongside Levi Colwill in defence.
James has missed huge chunks of the last few seasons due to injury, and the emergence of Acheampong and the good form of Malo Gusto means that James may be allowed to leave the club.
Chelsea captain Reece James looks set for a move
James is no doubt a supremely talented footballer, however, his injury issues have become a glaring problem and he has been linked with a move away from Chelsea as a result.
Spanish giants Real Madrid have been admirers of the England international for a long time [Daily Mail] and a move to the Spanish capital may allow him to manage his game-load to stay healthy, pending developments around Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool.
Another motivator for an international club to swoop for James could be the price tag. Chelsea have spent over £1billion on players since 2022 [Opta Analyst] and may need to start recouping some funds, so James could be available for a reduced price.
Stamford Bridge star may be latest Englishman abroad
Not too long ago, seeing an English international player abroad was a rarity, now it is commonplace.
James could be set to join the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher as current England squad members abroad.
Seeing his compatriots thriving in places like Munich and Madrid will surely be a motivator for James to call it quits on his time in England.
James missed out on playing in the European Championship last summer and will have his eyes set on making the squad for the World Cup in 2026, if he can get fit.
Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has taken over the England job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation, and he is likely to favour James from their time working together.
