The UEFA Champions League returns this week with a revamped format that looks set to take European football by storm.

Gone is the classic group stage format that saw a qualified team play three sides home and away with the the top two advancing to the knockout stages, with a new league system now introduced which will see the likes of Arsenal play eight different teams, with four at home and four away.

With the competition kicking off tonight with some big ties this week, the new format will see the biggest change to European football since the Champions League revamped in the 1990s, with the league games set to run until January rather than ending in December.

And Arsenal and Tottenham are ready to send scouts to a game already in the competition.

Arsenal and Tottenham scouts to attend Club Brugge vs Borussia Dortmund

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Arsenal and Tottenham will be one of many top European clubs having scouts in attendance for Club Brugge’s Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa also having officials at the ground.

Whilst no specific players were named in the report as of interest for the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, Brugge and Dortmund are two sides with exceptional players on their books who could become breakout stars in the Champions League.

Indeed, the Bundesliga giants surprisingly made the final last year having beaten Atletico Madrid and PSG on their way to Wembley Stadium, where Real Madrid got the better of Dortmund in an entertaining contest.

And Arsenal and Tottenham are now scouting out potential targets from both Dortmund and Brugge, with the Champions League this season set to be an interesting watch for football fans given the revamped competition.

Arsenal and Tottenham should use new UCL format to scout potential targets

With the Champions League this season the biggest to ever take place in terms of the number of teams taking part and the number of games taking place, Arsenal and Tottenham would be wise to use the competition to their advantage when it comes to the market.

The north London sides have some of the best scouts in the Premier League and are likely already compiling a list of players to target in the January transfer window, with the Champions League still ongoing when this market opens.

With the competition back this weekend, Arsenal and Tottenham are doing the right thing in sending scouts to games across the continent, and Brugge vs Dortmund is a good starting off point for the two Premier League sides.
