Report: Arsenal preparing surprise move for Wolves player who was 'excellent' against Gunners last season

Arsenal are preparing to make a surprise move for one Wolves player, who may welcome the chance to head to the Emirates despite being unlikely to play a great deal at all.

Arsenal have come agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title two years in a row now, so Mikel Arteta and Edu will be looking for the signings which they hope will take them across the line at the third attempt.

Of course, Arsenal are working on a move for Riccardo Calafiori. But there is work to be done behind the defence, with Aaron Ramsdale linked with a move away after losing his number one spot to David Raya.

Ramsdale is not the first player to lose his place to Raya down the years, with the Spaniard also taking the number one spot at Brentford after the Bees had sold Daniel Bentley to Bristol City.

Arsenal eyeing surprise move for Daniel Bentley

Interestingly, it appears that they could get the chance to be teammates from next season, with The Sun on Sunday (7/7; page 57) reporting that Arsenal are planning to make a bid for Bentley as cover for Raya.

Bentley has spent his two years at Wolves as cover for Jose Sa, making just five appearances in the Premier League since moving to Molineux.

It appears that he could however, find himself even further down the pecking order should he move to Arsenal in this window.

How Wolves player feels about prospect of being third-choice at Emirates

The Sun’s report notes that Arsenal are struggling to find a buyer for Ramsdale, with the Gunners demanding £50 million for the England international – and that could see Bentley end up as third choice. But the report suggests that he may still be open to the move in that instance.

Obviously, Arteta would surely love to keep Raya and Ramsdale, but Arsenal could have few complaints if the latter pushed for a move away – and the funds his departure would bring in would surely help strengthen other areas of the squad.

You would think that Wolves would not demand a huge sum for their backup goalkeeper – who Gary O’Neil has previously labelled ‘excellent‘ after a display against Arsenal – so it could be a shrewd piece of business if a deal can be struck.
