A Rafa Benitez signing is being linked with a move away to the continent, according to a recent report.

The Magpies narrowly missed out on European football last season and will be desperate to return in the fast-approaching campaign.

Eddie Howe will be eager to make a number of additions in the window but at the moment, his side are under pressure to sell before the end of the month to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

With that said, one of his key figures is of serious interest to a Turkish club.

Trabzonspor make Fabian Schar priority target

According to Karadeniz, Turkish outfit Trabzonspor have made Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar their priority target this summer.

The Super Lig side were chasing Marseille’s Samuel Gigot but after those talks stalled, they’re now keen to add Schar to their ranks – who has just one year remaining on his deal at St James’ Park.

The 32-year-old is currently away with Switzerland at the European Championships in Germany and has played every minute so far, helping his nation to reach the last 16 where they will face Italy.

Any forthcoming departure is likely to take place after the tournament, though, by that time, Newcastle aren’t expected to be under any pressure to sell.

Whether Schar would be open to a summer exit also remains to be seen.

Newcastle should offer Fabian Schar contract extension

Admittedly, Schar is entering the latter stages of his career but he’s shown no signs of a drop in level, so Newcastle should look to extend his stay.

As Howe’s men begin to transition over the next few years, the 84-cap international will play a vital role in nurturing young talent and being one of the leaders in the dressing room.

Further, for the fee Newcastle would likely receive for the 2018 Benitez signing, it just isn’t worth it.
