Report: Liverpool now expect 'fantastic' player to sign for Real Madrid this summer

Liverpool haven't made a signing yet this summer.

This time last year, the Reds had spent close to £100m to sign Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but despite having a new manager and a new recruitment team in place, the Reds are yet to make a move this summer.

The Reds have been linked with a number of potential signings, particularly at centre-back.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano stated a number of weeks ago that the Merseyside club were working on a new centre-back signing, but, as of yet, there has been no movement on this front.

One player who Liverpool were said to be keen on was Leny Yoro, but, unfortunately, the Reds aren't confident of getting a deal for the Lille star done.

Liverpool think Leny Yoro is going to Real Madrid

According to The Athletic, Liverpool do retain a strong interest in Leny Yoro, but they expect Real Madrid to win the race to sign the ‘fantastic‘ defender.

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time Liverpool have been beaten to a signing by Real Madrid in recent years.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham were both high-profile Liverpool targets that ended up at the Santiago Bernabeu instead, and Yoro may well do the same.

Liverpool need alternatives

Liverpool don't think they'll be able to sign Yoro this summer, but the reality is that they still need a new centre-back.

Joel Matip has left Anfield so there is a gap to be plugged, especially as Joe Gomez appears to be pivoting more towards being a full-back rather than a centre-half.

Of course, the emergence of Jarell Quansah over the past 12 months has been a huge boost, but there is reason to believe that Liverpool need a new central defender through the door in this transfer window.

As things stand, it looks as though Yoro could be playing in Madrid rather than on Merseyside next season.
